“This research highlights the importance of identifying the most vulnerable children in the school and developing programs for them that may prevent subsequent development of these negative outcomes,” said co-author Dr. Jennifer Schmalz of the department of developmental psychology at the UCLA campus.
Peer rejection during early adolescence is often a precursor to interpersonal violence in adulthood.
“Even more concerning is that in a recent national survey, 1 in 6 teens (15 percent) reported feeling so depressed that it was difficult to function,” Schmalz said. “This underscores the importance of preventing these negative outcomes and highlights the fact that peer rejection in early adolescence may be a strong predictor for later depression and suicidal ideation.”
For the study, Schmalz and colleagues used a prospective sample of 1,126 middle school children, followed for an average of five years. A total of 269 of the children were rejected by their classmates at least once and of these, 20 percent developed depression or suicidal ideation at age 16-17.
“Even though children who experience peer rejection had a higher risk for developing depression and suicidal ideation, the study shows that peers and teachers can play a role in protecting children from this negative outcome,” Schmalz said. “Our findings underscore the need for schools to implement programs for teens and the importance of knowing what cues and behaviors are most common in schools that may signal rejection.”[Evaluation of measures of psychosocial risk on the risk of disability].
The development of social and economic challenges requires a growing interest in the evaluation of health risks related to the social and psychological environment. This interest is also increased by the known correlation between the quality of life of the person and the state of health of the group of people who surround them.
